Sans_titre

A rare blue and white jar. Yuan dynasty, probably from Yunnan
The greyish-white porcelain painted around with a central band of meandering lotus above a band of stylised lappets at the foot, the shoulder painted with fish swimming amidst aquatic plants, the neck with stylised floral motifs, fitted box. 33.5cm (13½in) high. (2).Estimate: £4,000 - 5,000
Footnote: The dating of this lot is consistent with the result of a Thermoluminescence Test, oxford Authentication Ltd., no P103x33.

A jar of similar form and glaze, but painted with mythical beasts and flora, is illustrated, Transactions of the Oriental Ceramic Society, Volume 67. 2002-2003, pg.55, in the lecture Ceramics from South of the Clouds: Ceramics from Yunnan, where Cyril Beecher discusses this rare group of underglaze-blue porcelains from Yunnan province.

A similar jar was sold in these rooms, 6 March 2007, lot 47.
