A rare small anhua wine cup - Wanli six-character mark and of the period
The white-glazed cup entirely unadorned except for a design impressed in shallow relief on the interior wall of the cup, depicting two coiling dragons of typical late Ming style striding in mutual pursuit of small flaming pearls. 6 cm (2¼in) diam. - Sold for £8,500 plus Premium and tax

Finely painted around the slightly flattened globular body with a band of lotus flowers scroll, above a stylised band of ruyi clouds, the base and top of the neck mounted with a metal collar (restored).

Note: A similar blue and white kendi in the Ardebil Shrine collection is illustrated by John Pope, Chinese Porcelains from the Ardebil Shrine, Washington, 1956, pl.69. The Bloxam family collection originated with Rev J.F. Bloxam, who died in 1928. His heirs donated a number of fine Ming dynasty porcelains to the British Museum, including a Hongwu period cupstand.

Heavily potted with rounded sides and waisted neck below a straight-sided mouth rim, the exterior finely painted in rich tones of cobalt blue depicting the Guardian King and other figures in a rocky garden, a raised band in the centre of the neck inscribed: 'Dedicated by the Buddhist disciple Huang Hui-san when he was sixty-one years old in the Spring of the twenty-fifth year of the Wanli period of the Great Ming Dynasty' (cracked, incomplete, glaze frits). 35.6cm (14in) high.
